Synthetik’s transformational under-vehicle imagery technology is delivering value, transparency, confidence, and assurance to drive sales and enhance security.

Synthetik’s undercarriage imaging technology is helping Cox Automotive and Manheim to drive market transparency and potential adjacent growth while bringing efficiency and safety to the auction inspection process.

In 2019, Cox Automotive and Manheim were seeking a solution to transform mechanical inspections for the vehicle undercarriage because these inspections were being conducted with a mechanic/technician standing underneath the vehicle as it is ramped. Manheim wanted to find a better way to inspect cars, and make the process more efficient, safer, and cost-effective – and Synthetik technology was able to meet these requirements.

During the proof-of-concept, it was identified that by moving the imaging device to vehicle entry/check-in, all vehicles entering the auction could be imaged and this added an additional use-case, because once buyers were aware of the undercarriage imaging capability, they wanted to see the undercarriage as part of the typical imaging assets.

The requirement for this use case became more acute with the arrival of COVID-19, where the ability for buyers to travel to an auction and look, touch, and appraise vehicles in-person was removed. Consequently, buyers were seeking methods to help them make more informed buying decisions, as sales transitioned to a 100% digital marketplace, and the undercarriage imaging technology became increasingly important to Manheim and Cox Automotive.

With the national roll-out of Synthetik’s under-vehicle technology, dealers can now see the addition of high-resolution undercarriage images to the typical vehicle image pack, and these are available via OVE, Manheim.com, in the Condition Report, and on every platform that buyers use to make the right buying decision.

Synthetik has also developed a new User Interface (UI) for Manheim inspectors, where they can review the under-vehicle image, identify and annotate issues, and indicate whether the vehicle is a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. This UI is also used by the Cox/Manheim Arbitration Team, and they use the data and imagery to expedite the claims process.

The Synthetik under-vehicle imaging is currently installed at 14 Manheim auto-auctions, with a plan to expand to all 82 sites by the end of 2023.
