Synthetik Awarded Contract from NOAA for Hyperspectral Technology Development
Synthetik has been awarded a contract from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to develop a new low-cost hyperspectral imaging sensor and cloud-based data processing and machine learning platform.
Synthetik will develop a small computer tomography-based imaging spectrometer compatible with low-cost camera modules and small embedded electronics (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Jetson); to create an inexpensive high-resolution hyperspectral imaging system built from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. This will enable scalable high-resolution hyperspectral imaging and data collection at a fraction of the cost of currently available hyperspectral cameras.
The low-cost hyperspectral sensors will be combined with a state-of-the-art deep learning-based real-time data processing platform, and will be deployed on high-availability cloud computing hardware.
Hyperspectral remote sensing is used in a wide array of applications. Although originally developed for mining and geology it has now spread into fields as widespread as:
Defense and security
Agriculture
Ecology
Food processing and safety
Surveillance
Chemical imaging
The technology is continually becoming more available to the public and the global hyperspectral imaging market is projected to grow from $11.1B in 2019 to $25.2B in 2024.
NOAA are particularly interested in leveraging hyperspectral data to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the marketplace and at scale.
Synthetik plan to use the hyperspectral imaging module to augment their DeepVIEW Under-Vehicle Scanning System, currently being developed with combined funding from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and private investment.
